Judo Ground Work Transitions – Marti Malloy

Hi, I’m Martin Malloy. Two-time Olympian and bronze medalist
from 2012 in the sport of Judo. I’m here with my partner David
to show you some of my favorite transitions into newaza, which is what we call groundwork. And if you haven’t already checked out
the Martial Art Drills video I did on Juji Gatame, which is my favorite armbar, be sure to check that out because
this is a building block on that move, okay. So I’m gonna do the technique the same way
I did in the previous video, except instead of finishing the move, I’m gonna end up here on my side
because my partner is resisting. So he knows that I want to roll him
over and armbar him. So he dropped his weight, his leg back, all this weight is down here and I can’t actually get to his foot to roll him, I can’t pull him over, so most people give up the move
at this point but actually the answer is very simple. You just grab his hand here and do the armbar from the side and they’ll tap out. This is a step that most people overlook. They’re so focused on doing the whole move
that they feel like they have to just keep trying
to do that, when in reality, the end goal is the armbar and the arm is sitting there,
waiting to be taken, so you can just take it there instead.
