How to Improve Your Martial Arts Quickness : Importance of Using Vision in Martial Arts

Michael Lewis with Yeshua’s Ryu Martial Arts
on behalf of Expert Village. We’re going to be talking today about speed drills. Now,
more important than your hearing is your vision, because that’s exactly–that’s the main sensory
area of course, that you’re going to use when someone’s throwing a strike at you, to be
able to block, or to counter-attack. So, to develop speed, he’s going to hold one shield,
but the other hand is going to be up. And as soon as–and I’m going to have to use my
peripheral vision because I’m staring at my target–so as soon as he puts his pointer
finger up, I’m going to fire out the punch and pull it right back. Now another way to
make this drill a little bit more trickier is, you have to differentiate between the
pointer finger and the pinkie. So if he raises his pinkie, I don’t punch, but as soon as
he raises his pointer finger, I punch…okay. And if you notice–and you’ll notice it when
you do the drill, is that you’ll have a slight hesitation because your brain has to perceive
which finger he is putting up. And that way, you will become better and better at actually
being able to perceive and differentiate between strikes. Another way of doing this is by using
a flashlight. Now, using a flashlight that has a slider is probably not the best way
of doing it. You want to use one that has a button so you actually push it and flash
a little bit quicker. So, he holds the flashlight in his hand, and I wait for the flash, and
I throw the strike…okay. With the clicker, he is able to flash numerous times, and a
little bit quicker than he would have with the slider. So that way, sometimes if he flashes
twice, I have to throw two strikes in. And it’s very important being able to throw two
strikes, because you’re definitely working the recoil on that. So, that’s one way of
using the seeing part–your main sensory organ–to be able to develop your speed.
